The Government of India has conferred the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award on Mr. J. R. Gangaramani, President and Executive Chairman, Al Fara’a Construction, Properties & Industrial Group, UAE, for his significant contributions in building close links between India and the UAE. The Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award is conferred on Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origins or on institutions established and run by Non-Resident Indians or Persons of Indian Origin for their significant contribution towards better understanding of India abroad and support to India’s interests in a tangible way.

Mr. Gangaramani, a young civil engineer from Mumbai, moved to the UAE in 1974 to work as a construction manager. An ambitious visionary, he started with a medium-size contracting company in 1980, and subsequently embarked on a series of expansions in construction-related activities, culminating in the creation of the conglomerate “Al Fara’a Construction, Properties & Industrial Group,” his flagship enterprise. Mr. Gangaramani’s contribution to the enhancement of India’s image in the UAE is immense. He has brought pride and honour to India through his contribution to the growth and development of the UAE and the welfare of the Indian community. He has set up training centres for semi-skilled workers to enhance their skills. He has organized free medical camps, sponsored the education of needy children both in the UAE and India, and has also sponsored a number of sports events. He is the Chief Patron of Indian Association, Al Ain, and a generous benefactor of Indian School in Al Ain.

The award will be presented to Mr. Gangaramani by the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, at the valedictory function of the 7th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention scheduled to be held in Chennai between January 7-9, 2009.
